姉: older sister

姉あねは銀行ぎんこうで働はたらいています。

My older sister works at a bank.

姉あねは王宮おうきゅうの聖女せいじょで、私わたしは落おちこぼれの妹いもうとだった。

My sister was the palace saint, and I was the failure of a younger sister.

追い出おいだされたスサノオは、「母ははのいる根の国ねのくにへ行いく前まえに、姉あねのアマテラスに会あいたい」と言いって、高天原たかまがはらへ上のぼっていきました。

Driven out, Susanoo said, “Before I go to the Land of Roots where my mother is, I want to see my elder sister Amaterasu,” and he went up to Takamagahara.

オオヤマツミは、娘むすめと、その姉あねのイワナガヒメの二人ふたりを、ニニギのところへ送おくりました。

Ōyamatsumi sent his daughter and her elder sister Iwanagahime, the two of them, to Ninigi.

でも、ニニギは、姉あねの顔かおが美うつくしくなかったので、姉あねを返かえしてしまいました。

But Ninigi sent the elder sister back because her face was not beautiful.

オオヤマツミは、悲かなしんで言いいました。「二人ふたりを置おけば、命いのちは岩いわのように長ながく、花はなのようにもさかえたでしょう。でも、姉あねを返かえして、妹いもうとだけを置おいたので、命いのちは花はなのように短みじかくなるでしょう。」

Ōyamatsumi said sadly, “Had you kept both, your life would have been long like a rock and you would have flourished like blossoms. But since you sent the elder sister back and kept only the younger, your life will be short like a flower.”
