いる: to be (of animate objects)

庭にわに猫ねこがいます。

There's a cat in the garden.

庭にわには二に羽わニワトリがいる。

There are two chickens in the garden.

彼かれにはかわいいガールフレンドがいる。

He has a cute girlfriend.

きれいな服ふくを着きた人ひともいたかもしれません。

There may also have been people who wore beautiful clothes.

ふつうのムラには、数すう家族かぞく、数十すうじゅう人にんぐらいがいたと考かんがえられています。

It is thought that an ordinary village had a few families, a few dozen people.

山やまや川かわ、木きや動物どうぶつにも、精霊せいれいがいると考かんがえていたと思おもわれます。

It seems that they believed spirits dwelt even in mountains, rivers, trees, and animals.
