Family and Society
People in the Jōmon period lived in small groups.
It is thought that an ordinary village had a few families, a few dozen people.
There were also large villages like Sannai-Maruyama.
Hunting, fishing, and gathering nuts were done by everyone working together.
They also helped one another and worked together when making tools and food.
It is thought that they divided up the work, with men hunting and fishing and women gathering nuts and cooking.
But this is still not clearly understood.
Children learned how to do the work by staying close to the adults.
The elderly probably taught the people of the village important things, drawing on their long experience.
It seems that in the Jōmon period there were no major differences in social rank.
This is because there are not many big differences in the size of houses or in the objects found in graves.
Almost no traces of fighting have been found.
There is also evidence of people who could not move their bodies because of illness or injury but lived for a long time.
Probably the people around them helped them.
In this way, the Jōmon village is thought to have been a society in which helping one another was important.
