悲しい: sad

友達ともだちと別わかれるのは悲かなしい。

It is sad to part with friends.

オオヤマツミは、悲かなしんで言いいました。「二人ふたりを置おけば、命いのちは岩いわのように長ながく、花はなのようにもさかえたでしょう。でも、姉あねを返かえして、妹いもうとだけを置おいたので、命いのちは花はなのように短みじかくなるでしょう。」

Ōyamatsumi said sadly, “Had you kept both, your life would have been long like a rock and you would have flourished like blossoms. But since you sent the elder sister back and kept only the younger, your life will be short like a flower.”
