天孫降臨

The Descent of Ninigi

After the yielding of the land, Amaterasu’s grandson Ninigi was to go down from heaven in order to rule the earth.

Because a grandchild of the heavenly god came down, this event is called tenson kōrin, “the descent of the heavenly grandchild.”

At a fork in the road leading from heaven to earth, a brightly shining god was standing.

When Ame-no-uzume asked, “Who are you?”, the god gave his name as Sarutabiko and answered that he had come to act as a guide.

Ninigi came down from heaven with five gods called the Itsutomo no o.

Ninigi took three treasures with him: a mirror, jewels, and a sword.

These three later came to be called the Three Sacred Treasures.

Amaterasu handed over the mirror and said, “Worship this mirror as if it were me.”

Ninigi came down to Takachiho in Tsukushi.

Ninigi said, “This is a good land, lit by the morning sun and the evening sun,” and built a palace.

After that, Ninigi met Konohanasakuyahime, the daughter of Ōyamatsumi.

Ōyamatsumi sent his daughter and her elder sister Iwanagahime, the two of them, to Ninigi.

But Ninigi sent the elder sister back because her face was not beautiful.

Ōyamatsumi said sadly, “Had you kept both, your life would have been long like a rock and you would have flourished like blossoms. But since you sent the elder sister back and kept only the younger, your life will be short like a flower.”

For this reason, the story says, the lives of the emperors became short.

Konohanasakuyahime became pregnant in a single night, but Ninigi doubted it.

Sakuyahime built a hut with no door, set it on fire, and said, “If it is your child, it will be born safely.”

And she safely gave birth to three sons: Hoderi, Hosuseri, and Hoori.
