聞く: to hear

毎晩まいばん寝ねる前まえに音楽おんがくを聞きいている。

I listen to music every night before bed.

そのころは、ひもでつるして、鳴ならして、音おとを聞きく道具どうぐだったと考かんがえられています。

At that time they are thought to have been hung on a cord and rung so that people could hear the sound.

大おおきな銅鐸どうたくは、音おとを聞きくよりも、見みるための物ものになったといわれています。

It is said that the large dōtaku became objects to be looked at rather than listened to.

くらい洞どうくつの中なかで、笑い声わらいごえを不思議ふしぎに思おもったアマテラスは、戸とを少すこしだけ開あけて、「どうしてみんな笑わらっているのですか」と聞ききました。

Inside the dark cave, Amaterasu wondered at the laughter, opened the door just a little, and asked, “Why is everyone laughing?”

わけを聞きくと、「ヤマタノオロチという大おおきな蛇へびが、毎年まいとし来きて、娘むすめを食たべます。もう七なな人にん食たべられて、この子こが最後さいごの娘むすめです」と答こたえました。

When he asked why, they answered, “A giant serpent called Yamata no Orochi comes every year and eats a daughter. Seven have already been eaten, and this child is the last.”

最後さいごに来きたオオナムヂが、兎うさぎにわけを聞ききました。

Ōnamuji, who came last, asked the hare what had happened.
