ヤマタノオロチ: Yamata no Orochi

ヤマタノオロチは八やっつの頭あたまと八やっつの尾おを持もつ。

Yamata no Orochi has eight heads and eight tails.

わけを聞きくと、「ヤマタノオロチという大おおきな蛇へびが、毎年まいとし来きて、娘むすめを食たべます。もう七なな人にん食たべられて、この子こが最後さいごの娘むすめです」と答こたえました。

When he asked why, they answered, “A giant serpent called Yamata no Orochi comes every year and eats a daughter. Seven have already been eaten, and this child is the last.”

ヤマタノオロチは、目めがほおずきのように赤あかく、体からだは一ひとつで、頭あたまと尾おが八やっつずつありました。

Yamata no Orochi had eyes as red as winter cherries, one body, and eight heads and eight tails.

ヤマタノオロチは、八やっつの頭あたまを桶おけに入いれて酒さけを飲のみ、ねむってしまいました。

Yamata no Orochi put its eight heads into the vats, drank the sake, and fell asleep.

スサノオが、十拳剣とつかのつるぎをぬいてヤマタノオロチを切きると、川かわの水みずは赤あかく染そまったといいます。

It is said that when Susanoo drew his sword, the Totsuka-no-tsurugi, and cut down Yamata no Orochi, the river water turned red.
