因幡の白兎

The White Hare of Inaba

The god later called Ōkuninushi was at first called Ōnamuji.

Ōnamuji had many brothers, called the Yasogami, “the eighty gods.”

All the brothers wanted to marry Yakami-hime of the land of Inaba.

So they all set out for Inaba, but Ōnamuji walked at the very back as the one who carried the baggage.

At Cape Keta, the brothers found a hare with its skin stripped off, crying.

The brothers told it, “Bathe in the sea water, catch the wind, and lie on top of a high mountain.”

When the hare did as told, its skin cracked and the pain grew worse.

Ōnamuji, who came last, asked the hare what had happened.

The hare answered, “I was on the island of Okinoshima and wanted to cross to the mainland, so I tricked the wani.”

It said, “Let us compare how many of us there are,” made the wani line up, and crossed by jumping over their backs, pretending to count.

At the end it boasted that it had tricked them, and the last wani caught it and stripped off its skin.

Ōnamuji told it, “Wash your body right away in river water, spread the pollen of the cattail, and roll on it.”

When the hare did as it was taught, its body returned to normal.

The hare said, “Yakami-hime will not choose your brothers. Though you carry a bag, it is you who will marry her.”

This hare became the hare god, and it is said that it is worshipped at the Hakuto Shrine in Tottori.

Yakami-hime told the brothers, “I will marry Ōnamuji.”

The furious brothers did not forgive Ōnamuji, and that leads into the next story.
