天岩戸

The Heavenly Rock Cave

Amaterasu went into a cave called the Heavenly Rock Cave and shut the door.

With the sun goddess gone, both Takamagahara and the earth fell into darkness.

Bad things began to happen everywhere.

The countless gods, the eight million gods as they are called, gathered at Ame-no-yasu-no-kawara, the heavenly riverbed, and held a council.

A wise god, Omoikane, thought of several plans.

First, they gathered the long-crowing birds of the eternal land, that is, roosters that crow for a long time, and made them crow.

Next, Ishikoridome made a mirror called the Yata no Kagami, and Tamanoya made a necklace of jewels called the Yasakani no Magatama.

Ame-no-koyane read out norito, words of prayer to the gods.

Ame-no-uzume climbed onto an upturned tub and danced, stamping her feet.

Seeing this, all the gods burst out laughing together.

Inside the dark cave, Amaterasu wondered at the laughter, opened the door just a little, and asked, “Why is everyone laughing?”

Ame-no-uzume answered, “We are all glad because there is a god nobler than you here.”

Then the gods held out the mirror, and Amaterasu, wondering even more, came a little way out.

Then Ame-no-tajikarao took Amaterasu by the hand and pulled her out.

Futodama stretched a sacred rope behind her, so Amaterasu could no longer go back into the cave, and light returned to the world.

After that, the gods punished Susanoo, cut his beard and nails, and drove him out of Takamagahara.

It is said that the sacred rope and kagura, the dances offered to the gods, began with this story.

It is said that the mirror and the jewels later became, together with a sword, the treasures called the Three Sacred Treasures.
