東: east

太陽たいようは東ひがしからのぼります。

The sun rises in the east.

稲作いなさくは、まず九州北部きゅうしゅうほくぶで始はじまり、だんだん東ひがしへ広ひろがりました。

Rice cultivation began first in northern Kyushu and gradually spread eastward.

稲作いなさくは、数百すうひゃく年ねんかけて、だんだん東ひがしへ広ひろがりました。

Over several hundred years, rice farming gradually spread east.

その神かみは、「私わたしを、大和やまとの東ひがしの山やまにまつりなさい」と言いいました。

The god said, “Worship me on the mountain in the east of Yamato.”

二人ふたりは、「どこに住すめば、この国くにをよく治おさめられるだろうか。東ひがしへ行いこう」と話し合はなしあいました。

The two talked it over: “Where should we live to rule the land well? Let us go east.”

この東ひがしへの旅たびを、神武東征じんむとうせいといいます。

This journey east is called Jinmu tōsei, “Jinmu’s eastern expedition.”
