The Beginning of Rice Farming

Rice farming reached Japan from the continent.

By the continent we mean the area of China and the Korean Peninsula.

It is thought that rice farming reached northern Kyushu about 3,000 years ago.

Northern Kyushu is one of the regions closest to the Korean Peninsula.

It is thought that people who knew how to grow rice crossed the sea.

These people are called toraijin, or immigrants.

The immigrants are said to have brought rice seed, tools, and the way of making paddy fields to Japan.

Remains of old paddy fields have been found at the Nabatake site in Saga Prefecture and the Itazuke site in Fukuoka City.

At the Itazuke site, the remains of paddy fields with waterways came to light.

From this, it is thought that the method of making irrigated paddies, with water led in, came over from the very beginning.

Over several hundred years, rice farming gradually spread east.

It advanced from northern Kyushu through western Japan to the Kinki region, and then to eastern Japan.

In time, rice farming reached the Tōhoku region as well.

However, rice farming did not spread in Hokkaido.
