How the Yayoi Period Was Found

The name of the Yayoi period was born from a single kind of pottery.

In 1884, pottery was found at the Mukōgaoka shell mound in Yayoi-chō, Tokyo.

That pottery was thinner and harder than Jōmon pottery.

This pottery was called Yayoi-style pottery.

Later it came to be called simply Yayoi pottery.

And the age in which this pottery was used came to be called the Yayoi period.

At first it was not clear what age the pottery belonged to.

As research advanced, it became clear that it was pottery used by people who farmed rice.

Big discoveries continued after that.

In 1943, the Toro site was found in Shizuoka Prefecture.

In 1989, the Yoshinogari site in Saga Prefecture became big news.

We will study these two sites in detail later.

Scholars excavate sites and study life in the past.

Excavation means digging the soil little by little and examining what is inside.

Pottery, tools, and the remains of houses come out of the soil.

There are also methods of finding out the date by examining charcoal, wood, and the like.
