弥生時代とはどんな時代か

What Was the Yayoi Period?

The Yayoi period is the age that comes after the Jōmon period.

After the Yayoi period comes the Kofun period.

The Yayoi period is said to have lasted from about 3,000 years ago until around 1,700 years ago.

It was a long age that lasted more than a thousand years.

The name Yayoi comes from a place in Tokyo called Yayoi-chō.

In 1884, a new kind of pottery was found there.

From that pottery, this age came to be called the Yayoi period.

In this age, rice cultivation spread through Japan.

Rice cultivation is the method of growing rice in paddy fields.

Later, tools made of metals such as bronze and iron also began to be used.

Both of them were brought from the continent.

When lots of rice could be harvested, their way of life changed.

Because rice could be stored, a gap grew between rich people and poor people.

Conflicts over water and land also broke out between villages.

In time, small states, called kuni, took shape.
