Rice Fields and Farm Tools

A field where rice is grown is called a paddy field (suiden).

A paddy is made by surrounding it with a bank called an aze.

Because there are banks, water can be held in the field.

They also dug waterways to bring in water from rivers.

To keep the earth from collapsing, they drove in stakes and yaita, which are long thin boards.

Tools for the fields were made mainly of wood.

With wooden hoes and spades they dug the soil and leveled it.

A tageta, or field clog, is a wooden board that keeps your feet from sinking in soft mud.

Later, tools with iron blades also came into use.

Besides sowing seeds, there is thought to have been a method of planting young seedlings, too.

The tip part of the rice plant where the grains grow is called the ear (ho).

In autumn they cut off the ears with stone knives.

A stone knife is a tool made by making holes in a stone and passing a cord through them.

Grains of rice taken from the ears that still have their husks on are called momi.

To remove the husks from the momi, they used a wooden mortar and pestle.

The mortar is the container for the rice, and the pestle is the stick for pounding it.

In this way it became rice that could be eaten.
