神武天皇の東征

Emperor Jinmu’s Journey East

Ugayafukiaezu’s son Kamuyamato-iwarebiko is the person who later came to be called Emperor Jinmu.

Iwarebiko was at Takachiho with his elder brother Itsuse.

The two talked it over: “Where should we live to rule the land well? Let us go east.”

This journey east is called Jinmu tōsei, “Jinmu’s eastern expedition.”

The party passed through places such as Usa and Aki and arrived at Takashima Palace in Kibi.

It is said that they stayed eight years in Kibi.

Then they crossed the sea and arrived at Naniwa.

At Shirakata no Tsu, the party fought the army of Nagasunehiko.

Itsuse was struck by an arrow and said, “It was wrong to fight facing the sun. Let us fight with the sun at our backs.”

Itsuse died at Ono-minato in the land of Ki and was buried at Kamayama.

So the party went around by sea and headed for Kumano.

At Kumano, when a great bear appeared, everyone lost consciousness and fell down.

Then Takakuraji brought a sword.

This sword was the Futsunomitama, which Takemikazuchi, from the earlier story, had sent.

By the power of that sword, everyone woke up.

Takamimusuhi sent a giant crow called Yatagarasu and had it guide them on the mountain paths.

The party passed through Yoshino and Uda and defeated their enemies and Nagasunehiko.

Iwarebiko built a palace at Kashihara, and it is handed down that he became the first emperor.
