まく: to scatter

庭にわに水みずをまいて、暑あつさをやわらげた。

I sprinkled water on the garden to ease the heat.

種たねをまいて育そだてるほかに、苗なえを植うえる方法ほうほうもあったと考かんがえられています。

Besides sowing seeds, there is thought to have been a method of planting young seedlings, too.

オオナムヂは、「すぐに川かわの水みずで体からだを洗あらい、蒲がまの花粉かふんをまいて、その上そのうえにころがりなさい」と教おしえました。

Ōnamuji told it, “Wash your body right away in river water, spread the pollen of the cattail, and roll on it.”
