さかのぼる: to go back (in time)

この神社じんじゃの歴史れきしは、千年せんねん以上いじょう前まえに遡さかのぼる。

The history of this shrine goes back more than a thousand years.

川かわをさかのぼると、アシナヅチとテナヅチという老夫婦ろうふうふが、娘むすめのクシナダヒメと、泣ないていました。

Going up the river, he found an old couple, Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi, weeping with their daughter Kushinada-hime.
