あぜ: ridge between rice fields

農家のうかの人ひとが畦あぜの草くさを刈かっている。

The farmer is cutting the grass on the ridge between the rice fields.

水田すいでんは、まわりをあぜという土手どてで囲かこんで作つくります。

A paddy is made by surrounding it with a bank called an aze.

あぜがあるので、水みずをためておくことができます。

Because there are banks, water can be held in the field.

水田すいでんは、あぜで小ちいさく区切くぎられていました。

The paddies were divided into small plots by ridges (aze).

水路すいろもあり、木きの杭くいや板いたで、あぜや水路すいろの岸きしをささえていました。

There were also water channels, and wooden stakes and boards held up the banks of the ridges and channels.
