Festivals and Beliefs
For the people of the Yayoi period, a good rice crop was important for staying alive.
But the weather and disease could not be controlled by human power.
So people prayed to the gods and held festivals to wish for a good harvest.
It is thought that in spring they prayed for a good harvest, and in autumn they held festivals to rejoice in the crop.
The autumn harvest festival is also said to be linked to the later Niinamesai.
The Niinamesai is a ceremony in which newly harvested rice is offered to the gods in thanks, and it is still held today.
Divination was also practiced in the Yayoi period.
It was a kind of fortune-telling in which the bones of deer or boar were heated in a fire and the way the cracks formed was observed.
The bones used for this are called bokkotsu.
It is thought that people tried to learn the will of the gods from the shape of the cracks.
What exactly they asked about is not clearly known.
Wooden objects in the shape of birds have also been found.
Some people think that birds may have been connected with the spirit of rice.
The dōtaku we met earlier are also thought to have been used in festivals praying for a good harvest.
Large dōtaku may have been placed at festival sites so that people could see them.
