Immigrants and the Yayoi People

It is thought that many people crossed over to Japan from the continent in the Yayoi period.

These people are called toraijin, or immigrants.

The immigrants are said to have brought skills such as rice farming, metalwork, new pottery, and weaving.

We will study metal in detail later.

A person of the Yayoi period is called a Yayoi person (Yayoi-jin).

The bones of Yayoi people found in northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture are said to often belong to tall people with flat faces.

Many Jōmon people are thought to have been rather short, with deeply carved faces.

The immigrants did not replace the Jōmon people who had lived there all along right away.

The Jōmon people and the immigrants are thought to have mixed together over a long time.

The way they mixed differed by region.

In Hokkaido and Okinawa, life did not center on rice farming.

These things become known by studying human bones that come out of graves.

From the shape and size of bones, we can tell height and the shape of the face.

Recently, research that examines the genes remaining in bones has also advanced.

However, there is still much we do not know, and research continues today.
