Clothes and Weaving

The main material of clothes in the Yayoi period was hemp.

Hemp is a plant from which thin, strong thread can be taken.

Later, a cloth called silk also came to be made.

Silk is a smooth cloth woven from thread taken from the cocoons made by insects called silkworms.

However, it is thought that only some people in some regions could use silk.

To make cloth, you first make thread.

They split hemp bark and twisted it into thread.

When spinning thread, they used a spindle whorl.

A spindle whorl is a round disc of stone or clay with a hole in the middle.

If you put it on a stick and spin it, you can twist the thread and wind it up.

Next, the thread was woven into cloth.

Weaving thread is called hataori.

Parts of weaving tools have been found at sites.

The Chinese book Gishi Wajinden, written in the third century, describes the clothes of the people of that time.

It was a garment worn by passing the head through a hole in the middle of a cloth, and it is called a kantōi.

However, since this is a record written by foreigners, it does not mean that everyone wore the same clothes.
