黄泉の国

The Land of Yomi

Izanagi wanted to meet Izanami, so he went to the land of Yomi.

In front of the great gate, Izanagi said,

“The making of the land is not finished yet. Please come back.”

Izanami answered, “What a pity. I wish you had come sooner. I have already eaten the food of Yomi.”

“But I will consult the gods of Yomi. Until then, please do not look at me.”

Izanagi waited for a while, but he could wait no longer, so he broke off one tooth of the comb in his hair, lit it as a torch, and went inside.

Seeing Izanami there, her appearance utterly changed, Izanagi became frightened and ran away.

“I told you not to look, and yet you did. You have shamed me.”

Angry, Izanami made the demon-like women called the Yomotsu-shikome chase after Izanagi.

When Izanagi threw down his hair ornament, wild grapes grew, and when he threw down his comb, bamboo shoots grew.

While the pursuers were eating, Izanagi fled.

Next, the thunder gods came chasing after him, leading the army of Yomi.

Finally, when he threw three peaches, the pursuers turned and fled back.

At last, Izanami herself came chasing after him.

Izanagi blocked the boundary with Yomi with a huge rock that a thousand people would have to pull.

With the rock between them, Izanami said, “In that case, I will kill a thousand people every day.”

Izanagi answered, “In that case, I will build fifteen hundred birthing huts every day.”

In this way, it is said, people came to die, and new life also came to be born.
