イザナギとイザナミの国生み

Izanagi and Izanami Make the Islands

The gods of heaven gave a command to a male god named Izanagi and a female god named Izanami.

“Make the drifting land firm and create a country.”

Then they handed the two a splendid spear called the Ame-no-nuboko.

The two stood on the Floating Bridge of Heaven, put the spear into the sea, and stirred it around and around.

When they lifted the spear out, drops of brine fell from its tip.

Those drops piled up and formed an island called Onogoro.

The two went down to that island, set up a great pillar, walked around it, and became husband and wife.

However, the first child born to them, called Hiruko, was not well formed, so they put it on a boat and set it adrift on the sea.

It is said that this happened because the female god Izanami spoke first.

When the two consulted the gods of heaven, they were told, “Do it again.”

So when they tried once more, splendid islands were born one after another.

First came Awaji, then Shikoku, Oki, Kyushu, Iki, Tsushima, and Sado, and last of all Honshu.

These eight islands are called the Ōyashima, and it is handed down that this was the beginning of the land of Japan.

A story of giving birth to islands like this is called kuniumi, the birth of the land.
