The Kojiki and the Beginning of Heaven and Earth

One of the oldest myths in Japan is written in a book called the Kojiki.

The Kojiki is one of the oldest history books in Japan, completed in the year 712.

A man named Ō no Yasumaro wrote it.

It is said that he wrote down the stories that a person named Hieda no Are had memorized.

The Kojiki begins with the story of the time when heaven and earth first came into being.

At that time, gods appeared in a place in heaven called Takamagahara.

Takamagahara is the land of the gods in heaven.

The first god to appear in Takamagahara was Ame-no-minakanushi.

Next, two gods, Takamimusuhi and Kamimusuhi, appeared.

These three gods soon hid themselves away.

At that time the earth was still like oil floating on water, drifting about unsteadily like a jellyfish.

After that, a god appeared who sprang up vigorously like a reed shoot.

And then many gods were born, one after another.
