The Six Stages of the Jōmon Period

Because the Jōmon period lasted more than ten thousand years, it is divided into six stages.

The oldest stage is the Incipient stage.

Next come the Initial, Early, Middle, and Late stages, and the most recent stage is the Final stage.

In each stage, the shape and patterns of the pottery changed.

The Incipient stage began about 16,000 years ago.

Around this time, people began to make pottery.

In the Initial stage, the climate became warmer and settled life began.

In the Early stage, the sea level rose and many shell mounds were formed.

The Middle stage began about 5,500 years ago and was the most prosperous stage of the Jōmon period.

Large villages such as Sannai-Maruyama flourished, and flame-style pottery was made.

It is thought that from the Late to the Final stage the climate became somewhat colder and the population declined.

Toward the end of the Final stage, rice cultivation began in northern Kyushu.

The Initial stage began about 11,500 years ago, the Early about 7,000, the Late about 4,500, and the Final about 3,300 years ago.
