How the Jōmon Period Was Found

The study of the Jōmon period began about 150 years ago.

In 1877, the American scholar Morse came to Japan.

From a train window in Ōmori, Tokyo, Morse spotted piled-up shells.

That was the Ōmori shell mound.

Morse excavated the Ōmori shell mound together with his students.

A great many pieces of pottery, stone tools, and animal bones came to light.

Morse called the rope patterns on that pottery "cord marked" in English.

Later it was rendered into Japanese, and the word "Jōmon" was born.

This was Japan's first excavation carried out as a scholarly discipline.

It is said that Japanese archaeology began at that time.

After that, shell mounds and archaeological sites were discovered all over Japan.

New discoveries continue even today.
