The Sannai-Maruyama Site

The Sannai-Maruyama site in Aomori Prefecture is a well-known site of the Jōmon period.

People lived there for about 1,700 years, from about 5,900 years ago to about 4,200 years ago.

There was a very large village here.

Today the site is a park, and anyone can visit it.

A large pit dwelling (大型竪穴住居) more than thirty meters long was found at the site.

In addition, six large pillar holes were found, and today a tall, large post-set building has been reconstructed there.

The pillar holes were about two meters in diameter, and chestnut wood had been used for the pillars.

What this building was used for is still not well understood.

It is thought that the people of the Sannai-Maruyama village cultivated chestnut trees.

The chestnut is a useful tree that can become both food and house pillars.

Jade from distant Niigata Prefecture and obsidian from Hokkaido were also found.

From this we can tell that the people traded with distant lands.

In 2021, this site was registered as a World Heritage Site.
