Jōmon Pottery

A great invention of the Jōmon period was earthenware pottery.

When clay is kneaded with water, shaped, and fired, it becomes a hard pot.

In Aomori Prefecture, pottery about 16,000 years old has been found.

This is said to be among the oldest pottery in the world.

With a pot, you can put water in it and place it over a fire.

This is called cooking by boiling and simmering (nitaki).

If you boil them, hard nuts, meat, and fish all become soft and easy to eat.

It also became possible to leach out bitterness using pots.

The variety of foods increased greatly.

Most Jōmon pots are thick, brownish pots decorated with cord patterns.

As for shape, deep bowls that were narrow at the bottom were often used.

The shapes and patterns changed little by little over time.

The flame-style pottery found in Niigata Prefecture is famous for its shape resembling burning flames.

The beauty of Jōmon pottery still amazes many people today.
