What the Jōmon People Ate

People in the Jōmon period obtained their food by hunting, fishing, and gathering.

When hunting, they used bows and arrows to catch deer and wild boars.

They also made pitfall traps for animals to fall into.

Sometimes they went hunting with dogs.

These dogs are called Jōmon dogs.

When fishing, they used fishhooks and nets.

They gathered not only fish but also a great deal of shellfish.

They threw the shells away in a set place after eating.

What formed as the shells piled up is a shell mound.

One of the most important foods was nuts.

Acorns and horse chestnuts are too bitter to eat as they are.

They removed the bitter taste by soaking them in water or boiling them.

This is called leaching (aku-nuki).

They stored nuts for the winter by putting them in pits or drying them.

A hole for storing nuts is called a storage pit (chozō-ketsu).

It is thought that they also cultivated chestnuts and beans.
