縄文時代の前の時代

Before the Jōmon Period

The age before the Jōmon period is called the Paleolithic.

At that time the Earth was in a very cold ice age.

Water was locked up as ice and the sea level was low, so it is thought that in places Japan was joined to the continent by land.

It is thought that large animals came over from the continent.

There were large animals such as Naumann's elephants and mammoths.

People lived on the move, following the animals.

Their tools were mainly chipped stone tools made by striking stones.

They hunted large animals with spears made of stone.

In 1946, a man named Aizawa Tadahiro found stone tools at the Iwajuku site in Gunma Prefecture.

An excavation in 1949 confirmed that Japan, too, had a Paleolithic.

Until then, it was thought that Japan had no period older than the Jōmon.

Today, Paleolithic sites have been found all over Japan.
