縄文時代とはどんな時代か

What Was the Jōmon Period?

Long, long ago, there was an age in Japan when there were not yet any countries or kings.

That age is called the Jōmon period.

The Jōmon period lasted from about 16,000 years ago until around 3,000 years ago.

It was a very long period that lasted more than ten thousand years.

People did not grow rice in paddy fields; they lived by hunting, fishing, and gathering nuts.

People of this time made fired ceramics called earthenware pots (doki).

The pots had patterns made with cords.

Because of these cord-marked patterns, this era is called the Jōmon period.

Before the Jōmon period comes the Paleolithic.

After the Jōmon period comes the Yayoi period.

The history of Japan taught in school begins with these three periods.

What we know about the Jōmon period has been learned by studying objects found at archaeological sites.
