搗く: to hull (rice, barley, etc.)

祖母そぼは臼うすと杵きねで餅もちをついた。

My grandmother pounded rice cakes with a mortar and pestle.

臼うすは米こめを入いれる入れ物いれもので、杵きねはそれをつく棒ぼうです。

The mortar is the container for the rice, and the pestle is the stick for pounding it.
