これ・それ・あれ: this / that / that over there

Pronouns that point to things by distance from the speaker and listener.

これ is near me, それ is near you, あれ is far from both. They stand alone and are not followed by a noun (これ本 is wrong; use この本). Ask 'which one' with どれ.
