N3 · 09 Passive, causative & quoting

Gives a judgement in a modest, written way: it is thought that.

Plain form + と思われる / と考えられる. Used in reports, essays and papers instead of 〜と思う to sound objective. The doer is not named. 原因は不注意だと考えられる。

Examples

事故じこの原因げんいんは、ブレーキの故障こしょうだと思おもわれる。

The cause of the accident is thought to be a brake failure.

この問題もんだいは、今後こんごさらに深刻しんこくになると考かんがえられる。

This problem is expected to become even more serious in the future.
