Says that one thing replaces another, or compensates for it.

Noun + の + かわりに, or verb/adjective plain form + かわりに. Meaning one: take the place of. Meaning two: trade-off, good for bad. Compare そのかわり (sentence opener).

Examples

今日きょうは私わたしが料理りょうりするかわりに、明日あしたはあなたが洗い物あらいものをしてね。

I will cook today, and in exchange you do the dishes tomorrow.

バスのかわりに、自転車じてんしゃで通勤つうきんしている。

I commute by bicycle instead of by bus.
