〜あいだ(に): while; during

N3 · 02 Time and sequence

Marks a period during which something continues (あいだ) or happens (あいだに).

Verb te-iru form, i-adjective, or noun + の + あいだ(に). あいだ is for a state lasting through the whole period; あいだに is for one thing that happens somewhere inside it. Compare 〜うちに, which suggests a limited chance.

Examples

私わたしが寝ねているあいだに、地震じしんがあったらしい。

It seems an earthquake happened while I was sleeping.

夏休なつやすみのあいだ、ずっとアルバイトをしていた。

During the whole summer break, I worked part-time.
