そのかわり: in exchange; on the other hand

Says the next thing is a trade-off or compensation for the first.

Sentence-opening connector. One bad (or good) point is balanced by the opposite one. Inside one sentence, 〜かわりに does a similar job. Be careful: it is not "instead" in the sense of replacing the first thing.

Examples

この部屋へやは狭せまい。そのかわり、家賃やちんがとても安やすい。

This room is small. In exchange, the rent is very cheap.

今週こんしゅうは忙いそがしい。そのかわり、来週らいしゅうはゆっくり休やすめそうだ。

This week is busy. On the other hand, I will probably be able to rest next week.
