Adds a condition or exception to a rule you just stated.

Sentence-opening connector, used in rules, notices and instructions. It limits what was said, not a contrast of opinions. Often followed by 〜こと, 〜とする, or 〜です.

Examples

入場にゅうじょうは無料むりょうです。ただし、十二じゅうに歳さい以下いかのお子様おこさまは保護者ほごしゃ同伴どうはんです。

Admission is free. However, children twelve and under must be accompanied by a guardian.

返品へんぴんは可能かのうです。ただし、商品しょうひんが未み使用しようの場合ばあいに限かぎります。

Returns are possible. However, only if the item is unused.
