〜ものではない: one should not; it is not (the thing)

Says that something is not proper, according to common sense or advice.

Verb dictionary form + ものではない. A general rule of conduct, not for one specific case: 人の悪口を言うものではない. Also with 〜とは言えない sense: 簡単に言えるものではない. Compare 〜べきではない.

Examples

人ひとの悪口を言わるぐちをいうものではないよ。

You should not speak ill of others.

自分じぶんから年齢ねんれいを聞きくものではありません。

It is not proper to ask a person's age by yourself.
