Marks the place, time or area where something happens, in formal style.
Noun + において. A formal version of で. Written and spoken in speeches and documents. The modifying form is 〜における: 日本における人口. Do not use it for everyday places like a shop, say で.

The event was held in Tokyo.
現代社会において、情報の価値はますます高まっている。
