〜に比べて: compared with

N2 · 06 Extent and degree

Compares two things and says one is higher or lower than the other.

Noun + に比べて (also 〜に比べ, 〜と比べて). Example: 去年に比べて、今年は暑い. The first noun is the standard. The second half states the difference. More formal: 〜に比べると.

Examples

去年きょねんに比くらべて、今年ことしは雨が多あめがおおい。

Compared with last year, there is more rain this year.

東京とうきょうは地方ちほうに比くらべて、家賃が高やちんがたかい。

Rent is high in Tokyo compared with the regions.
