〜に反して: contrary to

Says that the result is the opposite of what was expected, hoped or planned.

Noun + に反して (also 〜に反し, 〜に反する + noun). Nouns are usually 予想, 期待, 規則: 予想に反して. Formal. Often the first half is a hope or prediction.

Examples

予想よそうに反はんして、試合しあいは私わたしたちの勝かちだった。

Contrary to expectations, our side won the match.

親おやの期待きたいに反はんして、彼かれは画家がかになった。

Against his parents' expectations, he became a painter.
