〜一方で: on the one hand; meanwhile

N2 · 05 Concession and contrast

Contrasts two parallel facts or says one thing is going on while another is also happening.

Plain form (noun + である) + 一方で, also 〜一方 and 一方では. Used for two sides or two trends. Compare 〜反面: that is the other side of one thing; 〜一方で can contrast different things or trends.

Examples

都市としの人口じんこうが増ふえる一方いっぽうで、地方ちほうの人口じんこうは減へっている。

While the population of cities grows, that of rural areas is shrinking.

彼かれは仕事しごとをする一方いっぽうで、夜間やかん学校がっこうにも通とおっている。

While working, he is also attending night school.
