〜にひきかえ: in contrast to

Compares two things and shows they are very different, usually with a judgment.

Noun or plain form (noun + の + に) + 引き替え (引き換え). Example: 兄にひきかえ、弟は活発だ. Both sides are compared; used for people or situations. Often shows a good-and-bad contrast. Written.

Examples

姉あねがおとなしいのにひきかえ、妹いもうとは活発かっぱつだ。

In contrast to my quiet older sister, my younger sister is lively.

去年きょねんにひきかえ、今年ことしは雪ゆきが少すくない。

Compared with last year, there is little snow this year.
