〜代わりに: instead of; in return

Says "instead of doing A, B", or "in exchange for A, I do B", or a compensating trade-off.

Verb plain form / noun + の + 代わりに. Meaning 1: instead of (先生の代わりに). Meaning 2: in return (手伝う代わりに、昼ごはんをおごって). Meaning 3: a downside to a good point (安い代わりに、味は普通だ).

Examples

私わたしが手伝てつだう代かわりに、昼ご飯ひるごはんをおごってね。

I will help you, so in return treat me to lunch.

この部屋へやは家賃やちんが安やすい代かわりに、駅えきから遠とおい。

This room is cheap, but in exchange it is far from the station.
