〜反面: on the other hand; but also

N2 · 05 Concession and contrast

Shows that something has two opposite sides at the same time.

Plain form (noun + である) + 反面 (also 〜半面). Example: この仕事は給料がいい反面、休みが少ない. Both sides apply to the same thing. Compare 〜一方で, which can also contrast two separate things.

Examples

この仕事しごとは給料きゅうりょうが高たかい反面はんめん、休やすみが少すくない。

This job pays well, but on the other hand it has few days off.

都会とかいは便利べんりな反面はんめん、生活費せいかつひがかかる。

The city is convenient, but on the flip side it costs more to live in.
