〜上で: in doing; after doing

N2 · 04 Purpose, means and scope

Shows that something matters when doing an action, or that something is done after finishing a step.

Verb dictionary form / noun + の + 上で (matters while doing: 日本で生活する上で大切なこと). Verb た-form / noun + の + 上で (after doing: よく相談した上で決める). Both are formal. Do not mix with 〜うえに (what's more).

Examples

契約書けいやくしょをよく読よんだ上うえで、サインしてください。

Please sign after reading the contract carefully.

仕事しごとを進すすめる上うえで、報告ほうこくは欠かかせません。

In carrying out the work, reporting is essential.
