Says what something is used for or needed for.
Verb dictionary form + のに, then 使う, 必要だ, 便利だ, 役に立つ, かかる. Example: この道具は肉を切るのに使う. Also written 〜のには. Do not confuse it with the contrast のに (even though).
Examples
この鍋はカレーを作るのに便利です。
This pot is handy for making curry.
資格を取るのに、半年かかりました。
It took six months to get the qualification.
