〜最中に: in the middle of

N2 · 02 Time and sequence

Says that something happened right in the middle of an action, usually an unwelcome interruption.

Verb 〜ている or noun + の + 最中に. Example: 会議の最中に電話が鳴った. The second event is usually a surprise or trouble. Compare 〜ところだ, a simple "about to / in the middle of".

Examples

食事しょくじをしている最中さいちゅうに、地震じしんが起おきた。

An earthquake struck while we were in the middle of eating.

電話でんわで話はなしている最中さいちゅうに、急きゅうに切きれてしまった。

Right in the middle of the phone call, it suddenly cut off.
