〜をきっかけに: triggered by; as an opportunity

N2 · 02 Time and sequence

Says that one event became the trigger or turning point for a change or a new start.

Noun + をきっかけに (also 〜をきっかけとして or 〜がきっかけで). The result is usually a lasting change. 〜がきっかけで is the common spoken form.

Examples

引っ越ひっこしをきっかけに、早起はやおきの習慣しゅうかんを始はじめた。

Moving house was the trigger for me to start getting up early.

あの映画えいがをきっかけに、日本語にほんごに興味を持きょうみをもった。

That movie got me interested in Japanese.
